Baqara 1-20

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:1–20)

In the name (bism; mark-identifier) of God (Allah; deity-agent), the Radiant (ar-Rahman; womb-expansion), the Merciful (ar-Rahim; womb-enclosure).

[The Code and the Shield-Bearers]:
(2:1) Alif Lam Mim (Alif Lam Mim; isolated-glyphs).
(2:2) This is the Book (al-kitab; inscribed-parchment) about which there is no doubt (rayb; shifting-sand), a guidance (hudan; path-marker) for those who guard themselves (al-muttaqin; shield-bearers).
(2:3) Who believe (yu'minun; anchor-weight) in the unseen (al-ghayb; hidden-curtain), and establish the prayer (as-salah; binding-connection), and from what We have provided (razaqna; distributed-portion) them, they spend (yunfiqun; disperse-seed).
(2:4) And who believe (yu'minun; anchor-weight) in what was sent down (unzila; dropped-weight) to you, and what was sent down (unzila; dropped-weight) before you, and in the hereafter (al-akhirah; final-edge) they are certain (yuqinun; solid-ground).
(2:5) Those are upon guidance (hudan; path-marker) from their Lord (rabb; master-cultivator), and it is those who are the successful (al-muflihun; soil-breakers).

[The Sealed]:
(2:6) Indeed, those who conceal (kafaru; cover-dirt), it is the same for them whether you warned (andharta; sound-alarm) them or you did not warn (tundhir; sound-alarm) them, they will not believe (yu'minun; anchor-weight).
(2:7) God (Allah; deity-agent) has set a seal (khatama; wax-stamp) upon their hearts (qulub; turning-pumps) and upon their hearing (sam'i; acoustic-membrane). Over their vision (absari; ocular-lens) is a veil (ghishawah; thick-covering), and for them is a great punishment (adhab; heavy-strike).

[The Fractured and the Market]:
(2:8) And of the people (an-nas; human-crowd) are some who say, "We believe (amanna; anchor-weight) in God (Allah; deity-agent) and in the Last Day (al-yawm; sun-cycle)," but they are not believers (bimu'minin; anchor-weights).
(2:9) They seek to deceive (yukhadi'un; bait-trap) God (Allah; deity-agent) and those who believe (amanu; anchor-weight), but they do not deceive (yakhda'un; bait-trap) except themselves (anfusahum; breath-vessels), and they do not perceive (yash'urun; hair-sense).
(2:10) In their hearts (qulub; turning-pumps) is a disease (marad; rotting-flesh), so God (Allah; deity-agent) increased them in disease (maradan; rotting-flesh). For them is a painful punishment (adhab; heavy-strike) because they used to lie (yakdhibun; fabricate-mirage).
(2:11) And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption (tufsidu; rot-spoilage) on the earth (al-ard; ground-soil)," they say, "We are but reformers (muslihun; order-restorers)."
(2:12) Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters (al-mufsidun; rot-spreaders), but they do not perceive (yash'urun; hair-sense).
(2:13) And when it is said to them, "Believe (aminu; anchor-weight) as the people (an-nas; human-crowd) have believed (amana; anchor-weight)," they say, "Shall we believe (anu'minu; anchor-weight) as the fools (as-sufaha; light-weights) have believed (amana; anchor-weight)?" Unquestionably, it is they who are the fools (as-sufaha; light-weights), but they do not know (ya'lamun; track-marks).
(2:14) And when they meet those who believe (amanu; anchor-weight), they say, "We believe (amanna; anchor-weight)." But when they are alone with their devils (shayatini; burning-adversaries), they say, "Indeed, we are with you. We were only mocking (mustahzi'un; scoffing-breath)."
(2:15) God (Allah; deity-agent) mocks (yastahzi'u; scoffing-breath) them and prolongs them in their transgression (tughyani; flood-overflow), wandering blindly (ya'mahun; sightless-groping).
(2:16) Those are the ones who have purchased error (ad-dalalah; lost-path) in exchange for guidance (al-huda; path-marker). Their trade (tijaratu; market-exchange) did not profit, nor were they guided (muhtadin; path-followers).

[The Simulations of Fire and Storm]:
(2:17) Their example (mathalu; struck-mold) is like the example (mathali; struck-mold) of one who kindled a fire (naran; combustion-flame), but when it illuminated (ada'at; cast-light) what was around him, God (Allah; deity-agent) took away their light (binuri; ray-beam) and left them in darkness (zulumatin; thick-shadows), not seeing (yubsirun; optic-focus).
(2:18) Deaf (summun; plugged-ears), dumb (bukmun; tied-tongues), blind (umyun; blank-eyes), so they will not return (yarji'un; step-back).
(2:19) Or like a rainstorm (sayyibin; pouring-water) from the sky (as-sama; overhead-canopy) within which is darkness (zulumatun; thick-shadows), thunder (ra'dun; acoustic-shock), and lightning (barqun; electric-flash). They put their fingers (asabi'a; digit-bones) in their ears (adhani; auditory-canals) against the thunderclaps (as-sawa'iqi; sky-strikes) in dread of death (al-mawt; breath-stoppage). God (Allah; deity-agent) is encompassing of the concealers (al-kafirin; dirt-coverers).
(2:20) The lightning (al-barqu; electric-flash) almost snatches away their sight (absara; ocular-lenses). Every time it illuminates (ada'a; cast-light) for them, they walk (mashaw; foot-stride) in it. When it darkens (azlama; cast-shadow) over them, they stand (qamu; halt-upright). If God (Allah; deity-agent) had willed, He could have taken away their hearing (bisam'i; acoustic-membrane) and their sight (wa absari; ocular-lens). Indeed, God (Allah; deity-agent) is over all things competent (qadir; measured-power).

Or like a cloudburst from the sky carrying darkness, thunder and lightning. They thrust their fingers into their ears against the thunderbolts, in dread of death. And Allah ﷻ encompasses those who cover the truth.

The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Whenever it lights the way for them they walk in it, and when darkness falls over them they stand still. Had Allah ﷻ willed, He would have taken their hearing and their sight. Indeed Allah ﷻ is powerful over everything.
