Thermal updrafts | gharānīq | "exalted" cranes | Surah Al-Hajj (Chapter 22), Verse 52

October 10, 2026 | BY ZeroDivide EDIT

Thermal updrafts form when solar radiation heats the Earth's surface unevenly. Darker or drier terrain absorbs more heat. This warms the air layer immediately above ground level. The heated air expands. It becomes less dense than the surrounding atmosphere and rises rapidly in a localized column. This creates a powerful vertical air current.

The thermal-soaring technique exploits these vertical currents for flight without mechanical effort. A bird locates a thermal and enters the rising air mass. It establishes a tight continuous bank to remain within the column boundaries. The bird spirals upward. The upward velocity of the rising air exceeds the bird's natural aerodynamic sink rate. Lift overcomes gravity entirely through environmental physics. The bird gains massive altitude without expending metabolic energy on active flapping.

Upon reaching the upper limits of the thermal column, the bird exits the spiral. It transitions into a shallow downward glide toward its destination. The bird steadily trades accumulated altitude for horizontal distance. It intercepts another thermal along its flight path. The cycle repeats. This continuous climb-and-glide sequence allows species like cranes and vultures to cross continental distances with near-zero active energy expenditure.

Al-Lat, Manat, and al-Uzza were pre-Islamic Arabian deities. The association with cranes originates from the historical account of the gharānīq involving Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). The Arabic term gharānīq translates to high-flying birds like cranes or herons.

Pre-Islamic Meccans viewed these goddesses as divine intermediaries. Cranes fly at extreme altitudes. This high flight served as a metaphor for spiritual elevation. The worshippers believed these deities ascended to the heavens to intercede with the supreme god. The title of exalted cranes directly symbolized this perceived capacity to carry earthly prayers up into the divine realm.

The pre-Islamic Quraysh recited a specific ritual chant while circumambulating the Kaaba. This invocation serves as the direct verbatim source of the gharānīq reference.

The exact Arabic recitation is:
"واللات والعزى، ومناة الثالثة الأخرى، فإنهن الغرانيق العلى، وإن شفاعتهن لترتجى"

The literal English translation states:
"By Al-Lat and al-Uzza. And Manat, the third, the other. Verily they are the exalted cranes. And indeed, their intercession is to be hoped for."

Meccan worshippers used this traditional pagan talbiyah to invoke the three goddesses. The text demonstrates their belief in these deities acting as high-flying intermediaries. The historical accounts regarding Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the disputed verses center entirely on this specific preexisting tribal chant.

The closest thematic and structural parallel in the Quran directly addresses and corrects the exact two concepts from the pagan chant—celestial high-flying beings and their power of intercession. This parallel appears just a few verses later in the exact same chapter, Surah An-Najm (53:26).

The Quranic verse states:

"وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ لَا تُغْنِي شَفَاعَتُهُمْ شَيْئًا إِلَّا مِن بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ اللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَاءُ وَيَرْضَىٰ"

"And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves."

This canonical verse directly parallels the disputed chant by replacing the pagan metaphor of "exalted cranes" with the reality of "angels in the heavens" (al-malā'ikah fī al-samāwāt) and addressing their "intercession" (shafā'atahūm). The Meccans believed Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Manat were angelic daughters of Allah who flew high to intercede for them. The Quran counters this by confirming angels exist in the heavens but entirely stripping them of independent intercessory power.

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) recited Surah An-Najm. He reached verses 53:19 and 53:20. These verses ask: "Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-Uzza. And Manat, the third, the other?" The alleged satanic interpolation followed immediately. The disputed text reads: "تلك الغرانيق العلى، وإن شفاعتهن لترتجى." The English translation is: "These are the exalted cranes. And indeed, their intercession is to be hoped for."

Islamic tradition states the Angel Gabriel corrected this recitation. The canonical text of Surah An-Najm entirely rejects the pagan deities. Verses 53:21 through 53:23 replaced the interpolation.

The English translation of these final verses is: "Is it for you the males and for Him the females? That indeed is an unjust division. They are not but mere names you have named them, you and your forefathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority."

The Quran addresses the interception of prophetic recitation in Surah Al-Hajj (Chapter 22), Verse 52. This verse provides the theological framework for the incident involving Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).

The English translation states: "And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet except that when he spoke, Satan threw into it. But Allah abolishes that which Satan throws in; then Allah makes precise His verses. And Allah is Knowing and Wise."
