The consonantal skeleton commits to neither, and Arabic preserves both in a near-minimal pair, خِلافة khilāfa (with tā marbūṭa) leaning succession and the caliphate, خِلاف khilāf leaning opposition and disagreement, one root lexicalizing both faces at a tā marbūṭa's distance. Read through the divergence-face, the caliphate-as-office-passed-down-a-line is the face that divides. Q 33:40, mā kāna muḥammadun abā aḥadin min rijālikum wa-lākin rasūla llāhi wa-khātama n-nabiyyīn, severs fatherhood (a begetting relation, horizontal) from khatam-and-risāla (a direct reception relation, vertical). Road A negates the false horizontal; Road B affirms the true vertical.
