Prologue to the Gospel of John (John 1:1–18) and Mazdean (Zoroastrian) concepts

October 08, 2026 | BY ZeroDivide EDIT

Prologue to the Gospel of John (John 1:1–18) was composed through a creative process of interpretatio Iohannica. While firmly grounded in Jewish tradition and echoing the creation narrative of Genesis 1:1, the Johannine community systematically integrated a coherent network of Mazdean (Zoroastrian) concepts that were widely circulating across the eastern Mediterranean during the late 1st century CE.

The Prologue’s structure

1. The Logos as "Incarnate Utterance" (Tanu.mąϑra)

  • In Avestan Mazdean scriptures, the term mąϑra (cognate with Sanskrit mantra) refers to the sacred divine utterance or formula that sparks creation.
  • Deities like Miϑra and Sraōša, as well as the prophet Zarathustra, are described in Avestan texts as tanu.mąϑra—literally "incarnate utterance" or "utterance made flesh and bones" (tanu meaning physical body).
  • John 1:14 ("And the Logos became flesh") directly adapts this concept, presenting Jesus as the divine mąϑra/Logos taking on a physical human body.

2. The Four Eons and the Structure of the Prologue Hymn

The core of the Prologue consists of an embedded liturgical hymn (the Logoshymnus, reconstructed as John 1:1–5, 9–11, 14). This hymn follows the exact narrative progression of the Mazdean Doctrine of the Eons, which divides cosmic history into four 3,000-year ages (12,000 years total):

  1. Mēnōg Phase (John 1:1–2): The world exists purely in mental form as an idea within the mind of the deity before physical creation.
  2. Gētīg in Mēnōg Phase (John 1:3–4): Material creation comes into ideal existence; it contains physical life (gaiiō.dā) and light, but remains immobile.
  3. Ēbgat / Gumēzišn Phase (John 1:5, 9–11): At year 6,000, darkness (skotia / Ahriman) enters creation, initiating an age of "mixture" where good and evil coexist in conflict, and humanity fails to recognize or receive the true light.
  4. Saošiiaṇt & Frašō.kǝrǝti Phase (John 1:14): At year 9,000, the savior figure appears to reveal the true religion, defeat evil, restore creation, and initiate the resurrection of the dead.

3. Jesus as the Eschatological Savior (Saošiiaṇt / Astuuaṱ.ǝrǝta)

  • In Mazdean eschatology, the final cosmic restorer is the Saošiiaṇt, specifically named Astuuaṱ.ǝrǝta—meaning "ossified Truth" or "Truth in flesh and bones".
  • Mazdean tradition holds that the Saošiiaṇt is born of a virgin mother who becomes impregnated while bathing in a sacred lake containing Zarathustra's preserved seed.
  • Early Christians in the Johannine school adapted this framework to show that Jesus was not only the Jewish Messiah, but also the fulfillment of the Mazdean/Gentile prophecy of the final Saošiiaṇt.

4. Creation, Divine Authority, and Cosmic Choice

  • In Avestan theology, Spәṇta Mainiiu ("bounteous mental force") acts as the sole instrument through which Ahura Mazda creates "all things" (vīspanąm), directly paralleling John 1:3 ("everything came to be through him").
  • The central Mazdean prayer Ahuna Vairiia promises xšaϑra (divine authority/power) to those who freely choose cosmic Truth (aṣ̌a). This mirrors John 1:12, where those who receive the Logos are given the authority (Greek exousia) to become children of God.

5. Geographic and Historical Setting

This theological synthesis developed in regions closely associated with the Gospel of John:

  • Caesarea Maritima (Judea): Capital of Provincia Iudaea, home to an early Christian community alongside one of the Roman Empire's earliest Mithraea (established ~80 CE).
  • Anatolia: Maintained an "Anatolian time capsule" of Mazdean culture (including Cappadocian calendars, fire temples, and active magi) well into the Roman era.

Cosmic Oaths and the Soul's Choice (Verses 1-10)

(91:1): By the sun (wa-ash-shamsi; root: √Š-M-S; radiating heat → central luminary) and its morning brightness (wa-ḍuḥāhā; root: √Ḍ-Ḥ-W; spreading sunlight → forenoon clarity).
(91:2): And by the moon (wa-al-qamari; root: √Q-M-R; pale white → reflecting celestial body) when it follows it (iḏā talāhā; root: √T-L-W; walking behind → trailing/reciting). [The Moon is the one that lags behind every day relative to the Sun]
(91:3): And by the day (wa-an-nahāri; root: √N-H-R; flowing river → broad daylight) when it displays it (iḏā jallāhā; root: √J-L-W; polishing a mirror → revealing/uncovering).
(91:4): And by the night (wa-al-layli; root: √L-Y-L; dark envelopment → obscurity/nightfall) when it conceals it (iḏā yaġšāhā; root: √Ġ-Š-W; covering with a cloak → enshrouding).
(91:5): And by the sky (wa-as-samā'i; root: √S-M-W; raised high → canopy/heavens) and He who constructed it (wa-mā banāhā; root: √B-N-Y; layering stones → building/structuring).
(91:6): And by the earth (wa-al-arḍi; root: √A-R-Ḍ; low treadable ground → terrestrial sphere) and He who spread it (wa-mā ṭaḥāhā; root: √Ṭ-Ḥ-W; rolling out dough → expanding/flattening; uniq: rare synonym of daḥāhā).
(91:7): And by the soul (wa-nafsin; root: √N-F-S; breath of life → animating essence/self) and He who proportioned it (wa-mā sawwāhā; root: √S-W-Y; making level/even → balancing/perfecting).
(91:8): And inspired it (fa-alhamahā; root: √L-H-M; swallowing/gulping → instilling instantly/inspiring) with its wickedness (fujūrahā; root: √F-J-R; tearing open → bursting into sin/immorality) and its righteousness (wa-taqwāhā; root: √W-Q-Y; raising a shield → mindful guarding/piety).
(91:9): He has succeeded (Qad aflaḥa; root: √F-L-Ḥ; cleaving soil → cultivating success/thriving) who purifies it (man zakkāhā; root: √Z-K-W; plant growing straight → cleansing/nurturing virtue).
(91:10): And he has failed (wa-Qad ḫāba; root: √Ḫ-Y-B; returning empty-handed → utter disappointment) who buries it (man dassāhā; root: √D-S-S; hiding in dust → corrupting/obscuring).

  • ∴ Cosmic binaries mirror the internal dualism of human consciousness. Ultimate triumph relies on cultivating inherent purity. Utter ruin follows entombing that purity in vice.

  • ﷺ The Prophet (ﷺ) would recite verse 9 and pray. "O Allah, grant my soul its piety and purify it. You are the best to purify it" (Sahih Muslim).

  • ∞ The macrocosm dances in perfect equilibrium. The microcosm must actively awaken to match it.

The Fate of Thamud and Divine Leveling (Verses 11-15)

(91:11): Thamud denied (kaḏḏabat ṯamūdu; root: √K-Ḏ-B; speaking falsehood → rejecting truth) by their transgression (bi-ṭaġwāhā; root: √Ṭ-Ġ-Y; water overflowing banks → exceeding bounds/arrogance).
(91:12): When was dispatched (iḏ inbaʿaṯa; root: √B-ʿ-Ṯ; stirring from sleep → arousing/sending forth) the most wretched of them (ašqāhā; root: √Š-Q-Y; distress/hardship → deepest misery/wickedness).
(91:13): And said to them (fa-qāla lahum; root: √Q-W-L; opening the mouth → speaking/declaring) the messenger (rasūlu Allāhi; root: √R-S-L; flowing gently → dispatched envoy) of Allah (Allāhi; root: √A-L-H; to worship → The One Deity), "[Observe] the she-camel (nāqata; root: √N-W-Q; skilled training → female camel) of Allah (Allāhi; root: √A-L-H; to worship → The One Deity) and her drink" (wa-suqyāhā; root: √S-Q-Y; giving water → assigned drinking share).
(91:14): But they denied him (fa-kaḏḏabūhu; root: √K-Ḏ-B; speaking falsehood → rejecting) and they hamstrung her (fa-ʿaqarūhā; root: √ʿ-Q-R; cutting the base → crippling/slaughtering). So ruined them (fa-damdama ʿalayhim; root: √D-M-D-M; pounding earth repeatedly → absolute crushing destruction; uniq: onomatopoeic hapax) their Lord (rabbuhum; root: √R-B-B; fostering/rearing → Sustaining Master) for their sin (bi-ḏanbihim; root: √Ḏ-N-B; tail of an animal → trailing consequence/sin), and He leveled it (fa-sawwāhā; root: √S-W-Y; making flat → completely equalizing in ruin).
(91:15): And He does not fear (wa-lā yaḫāfu; root: √Ḫ-W-F; sensing danger → dreading/fearing) its consequence (ʿuqbāhā; root: √ʿ-Q-B; following closely behind → aftermath/repercussion).

  • ∴ Disregarding sacred limits breeds catastrophic societal collapse. Divine justice levels the arrogant entirely without hesitation or dread of cosmic aftermath.

  • ﷺ The Prophet (ﷺ) compared the sheer audacity of the camel's killer to the worst of humanity, warning against collective complacency in the face of blatant transgression.

  • ∞ To sever the sacred vessel is to invite the crushing weight of cosmic equilibrium.

 Surah Ash-Shams

1 is explained by 2.

1. COSMIC OATHS AND THE DUAL NATURE OF THE SOUL

By the sun (shams; √Sh-M-S; bright orb → radiant heat) and its morning brightness (duha; √D-H-W; spreading out → forenoon warmth). By the moon (qamar; √Q-M-R; white/pale → lunar reflection) as it follows it. By the day (nahar; √N-H-R; flowing river → daylight stream) as it reveals its splendor. By the night (layl; √L-Y-L; dark envelopment → obscurity) as it conceals it. By the heaven (sama'; √S-M-W; raised canopy → elevated expanse) and He who built (bana; √B-N-Y; laying stones → structural foundation) it. By the earth (ard; √'-R-D; firm ground → terrestrial floor) and He who spread (taha; √T-H-W; stretching flat → leveled expanse) it. By the soul (nafs; √N-F-S; breath/blood → vital essence) and He who proportioned (sawwa; √S-W-Y; smoothing/leveling → balanced harmony) it. He then inspired it with an understanding of its wickedness (fujur; √F-J-R; tearing open → unrestrained sin) and its righteousness (taqwa; √W-Q-Y; shielding/guarding → protective piety). The one who purifies (zakka; √Z-K-W; plant thriving → moral growth; Symbolism: Salvation) it has certainly succeeded. The one who corrupts (dassa; √D-S-S; burying in dust → hiding truth) it has certainly failed.

2. THE REBELLION OF THAMUD AND INEVITABLE RETRIBUTION

The tribe of Thamud denied the truth out of their rebellious transgression (tughyan; √T-Gh-Y; overflowing banks → excessive arrogance). The most wretched (ashqa; √Sh-Q-Y; severe misery → destined ruin) among them was dispatched for this task. The Messenger of God warned them to leave the she-camel (naqah; √N-Q-Y; purified beast → divine sign) of God alone to drink (suqya; √S-Q-Y; drawing water → sustenance). They rejected him and hamstrung ('aqara; √'-Q-R; cutting tendons → brutal slaughter) her. Their Lord then brought down total destruction (damdama; √D-M-D-M; crushing repeatedly → flattening ruin; Symbolism: Wrath) upon them for their sin. He leveled (sawwa; √S-W-Y; smoothing out → equal distribution) this punishment over them all. He does not fear (yakhaf; √Kh-W-F; trembling/fleeing → dread) the consequence ('uqba; √'-Q-B; striking the heel → final outcome; Insight: Sovereign Finality) of His decree.

Concise Summary
God swears by contrasting cosmic phenomena to illustrate the human soul's innate capacity for both moral purity and unrestrained sin. The historical obliteration of Thamud serves as a definitive warning against burying the soul in rebellion and violating divine boundaries.

1 is explained by 2.

Note.

The soul is inspired with both, its fujūr and its taqwā. That is the capacity: the way of tearing open and the way of guarding are both made known. Success is purifying that soul. Failure is burying it.

The she-camel is the case set in front of Thamūd. The messenger's whole charge here is nāqata Allāhi wa-suqyāhā, the she-camel of Allah ﷻ and her drink. Leaving her is the guarding. The hock-cut, by the most wretched of them, is the tearing open. The surah then levels them for that sin, and the same verb that proportioned the soul comes back as their leveling.

So she is the test in the only sense this composition licenses: the marked body at which the inspired pair becomes an act. The oath states the two ways. The camel is where they take one.

The first movement swears by acts that do not ask permission. The sun is uncovered by the day and covered by the night. The moon comes after it. The heaven is built, the earth spread, the soul proportioned and then inspired with both a tearing-open and a guarding. Success is to purify that soul. Failure is to bury it. Every oath is a completed gesture. Nothing in the first movement waits.

The second movement is the same gesture at the size of a people. Thamūd deny by overflow. The most wretched of them is sent on, as the moon was said to follow. The messenger's charge is tiny beside the oaths: leave the she-camel of Allah ﷻ her drink. That drink is the small spreading, kin to the forenoon and to the spread earth, a share extended and not to be seized. They deny him and cut the tendon. The cut is the tearing-open at the size of a leg. The burial of the soul has become a burial of a living sign. Their Lord crushes them for the sin and levels them, and the verb that proportioned the soul returns as the verb that flattens the settlement. Proportioning and leveling are one gesture, making even. What would not be proportioned to the limit is made even by force.

The night covers the sun and does not negotiate. The day uncovers it and does not apologize. The last clause joins that class. He does not fear the sequel, as the covering does not fear the dark it makes and the spreading does not fear the ground it lays. The oaths are the decree in things that cannot refuse. The camel is the decree in a thing that can. They refuse. The sequel falls, and the fall has no recoil.

What the joining does not do is rename her. She remains the body at which the inspired pair becomes an act: guarding as leaving her drink, tearing-open as the hock-cut, burial as the failure the oath already priced. The first movement states the two ways and only exhibits the failing one. The success stays an oath. The failure becomes a people leveled.

//

Thamūd's private theology: they thought a total blow was impossible because a Worshipped with no worshippers ceases to be worshipped. What they say is the dare. At 7:77, after the cut, they tell Ṣāliḥ AS to bring what he promises if he is one of the sent. At 91:11 the denial is by ṭughyān. At 26:157 they hamstring and by morning they regret. The error on the page is refusal of the sign and a bet that the threat will not land. A bet that it will not land is not yet a doctrine that He cannot afford to land it.

That doctrine fits a claim the corpus makes elsewhere, that Allah ﷻ is free of need of what He made.
